Census worker killed in Kentucky

This is scary:

The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word 'fed" was scrawled on the dead man's chest.

The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky. The Census has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the death was a killing or a suicide, and if a killing, whether the motive was related to his government job or to anti-government sentiment.

Like Doug Mataconis says, I hope people don't jump to conclusions and I hope that whoever did this is caught.

I can say this with almost absolute certainty... The person who killed this poor man listens to Glenn Beck and hates our President

Brilliant Mike. That narrows it down to somewhere north of 50% of the American population.

Brilliant or not I am tired of the s*it slinging conservative brain dead idiots in this country...really tired of it all led by Millionare morons like Glenn Beck....they have done nothing but disrespect the President from day one...and it's getting to be more than tiresome at this point.

Cry me a damn river. People have a right to complain about the president and Congress. Suck it up.

Hey I am not crying about anything...that is your boy Glenn who cries daily..wah wah....give em a diaper. Most of the complaints have been far from legit...typical righty fear crap. And they have been the ones crying since Nov 4. And then the dumber ones will go and pull violent acts.

He isn't my "boy." The guy grates at my nerves. I don't watch his show, or any cable news or opinion program for that matter. However, he has as much a right to voice his opinion as you.

John, Could you remind me what the liberal left did to our previous president for 8 years? How come it was OK for GWB but not for BHO?

I can only speak for myslef and state I complained about the last guy around 3 years into office...Obama on the other hand has NEVER been given a chance and has in no way made any errors as glaring...can't see the comparison really. But I do understand certain people must have been lying in wait after 'their guy' was bashed...but not by me.

This is typical crap that started day one of the Clinton administration. Right wingers are a bunch of babies, whiners, sore losers and bigot fascists. Its time for them to shut up and put up like we did for most of GW's presidency. If we can survive GW, we can survive anything.

Spare us, please. I'm no fan of George W. Bush, but the left was all over him from day 1.

People have a right to voice their opinions, provided they do not harm the life or liberty of another individual.

Sorry my friend, but the extremism we are seeing now did not exist during the Bush administration and people are harming individuals and spewing the kind of rhetoric that is fascist and they need to be held accountable for it. The left gave Bush a break for at least the 1st term. Tell me one thing that the right did for this country in the past 8 years other than war and financial armageddon which is a given.

Anyone who uses conservatism or talk radio for the blame for this is an asshole. Maybe i should just generalize race and religion as a basis for all crime. Beck peaches tolerance and faith so whoever would blame him doesnt have a clue and is just repeating liberal talking points. Conservatism is based in tolerance unlike liberals who at every turn sprout venom, race bating, class envy and labels all who disagree.

I don't disagree that those who are protesting now were largely absent during the Bush Administration.

However, calling the rhetoric "fascist" is disingenuous and an outright lie. Most, if not all, I've heard from protesters has been about free-markets.

Do yourself a favor a look up the definition of fascism before spouting off an inane statement like that.

The left gave Bush a break for at least the 1st term.

Surely, you jest.

Tell me one thing that the right did for this country in the past 8 years other than war and financial armageddon which is a given.

Did you miss the part where I said, "I'm no fan of George W. Bush"?

lol you sound like you are talking about conservatives here. Tolerance my butt! Half of my family are conservative and there isn't a tolerant one in the bunch, except me. If people are poor, its their fault. If people can't get an education, its their fault. My family believes that everyone comes into this world with equal opportunities and that is just plain wrong. I have never seen such a bunch of intolerant people as the conservatives I know. They excused away Enron, AIG, Wall Street, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as something that the govt is all responsible for but they won't blame the people (conservatives) who were in office at the time and weren't watch the fort or enforcing regulations. And now after only 9 months in office they have the audacity to blame Obama for all of this when he hasn't even passed his first budget yet. I find their audacity to be stunning.

No, the reason education is so bad in the country is because of government. We have no competition and no choice.

An argument can certainly be made that welfare laws keep people poor because there is no real incentive or motivation to improve their situtation.

They excused away Enron, AIG, Wall Street, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as something that the govt is all responsible for but they won't blame the people (conservatives) who were in office at the time and weren't watch the fort or enforcing regulations.

I love when people bring up Enron but don't realize how in bed they were with the Clinton Administration when it came to environmental.

Get off the talking point. George W. Bush enacted more regulation than any president in recent memory.

I will give you this...conservatives are intolerant.

A man gets killed trying to earn a living and all your alls posts show no interest in the fact at hand. You people are living proof why this country is in the shape it in and headed for worse. To the Sparkman family We will be praying for you all in your time of loss. God Bless.

Anyone who thinks conservatives - particularly the moron Glenn Beck (more like Glenn Dreck) - are tolerant have their head in the sand.

They're not tolerant of anyone who isn't a straight Christian man - they may have softened up a bit on nonwhite people, but some of them don't like anyone who's not white, either.

"People have a right to voice their opinions..."

They most certainly do, but I am still tired of hearing from the likes of Beck, Hannity, the birthers, the flaggers, and a host of others.

Gee, do you guys think it has anything to do with Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky Census worker (may he rest in peace) wandering around during marijuana-harvesting season in an area known for moonshine, meth labs and "get off mah land" for *decades*?

An area with a tradition of suspicion and hostility to outsiders, so much so that a documentary filmmaker was hot to death there in *1967*?

A pocket of poverty and ignorance the "feds" have ignored (except for building
a prison there in 1990)?

Nah, it's all Glenn Beck's fault.

'scuse me, "...SHOT to death...".

Rociante is correct.

The area was batshit long before Glenn Beck came along.

Anything that you are thinking of as "fuel" for these actions amount to nothing. It's like throwing twigs into an inferno. They've long, long, long hated the "feds".

I'm one of the workers for the census this year and im shocked that you people done seem to care that the man was killed. I'ts extremely scary to go door to door and collect this information so that it may benifit us in the future. We are just doing our jobs and mean no harm to anyone. We also have to make a living. I'm shocked at the response to this article and the news of the death of this man. My prayers go out to the family of this man. God bless.

Oops i mean dont seem to care not done

What I find incredibly amusing is that shear amount of ignorance found amongst people who post on blogs. It seems that we may only care about having our immortalized words posted for all to see exactly how uneducated, sophmoric and intolerant we are.

For those of you debating left and right. In my humble opinion there is no real difference between the two groups as far as politicians go. They both care only for themselves and will do whatever they need to do in order to get what their agenda requires. Your ignorant slaps at each other show that you have as much "tolerance" for others as those individual(s) who may have put this man to death.

To those of you who believe this man was put to death by some nefarious means, I pray that you have an open enough heart to realize the circumstances involved. As the case has not been solved, there is no way to know what lead to this man's death. The chance that this man did this to himself (however improbable) is always a possibility. The likelihood that someone else did this to him (given the history of the area) is more likely and I hope that the facts are revealed and those justice if brought accordingly.

I wish to express my condolences to the Sparkman Family and I pray that you all find peace.

Nathan a nice piece. Remember tolerance of the ignorant is a step to knowing how mankind thinks and then will know where he will then pass.
