Bobby Cox to retire after 2010

Bobby Cox, manager of the Atlanta Braves since 1990 (also from 1978 to 1981), will retire at the end of the 2010:

The future of Bobby Cox has been decided: The long-time Braves manager will return for the 2010 season, and then that will be it.

The team issued a news release on Wednesday afternoon saying they have signed Cox to a one-year contract extension through next season. After that, Cox will retire. The rest of the Braves' coaching staff will also return next year.
[...]
As part of the extension, Cox has been given a five-year consulting agreement, from 2011-15, where he will advise and consult in all areas of baseball operations, including the Major League club, Spring Training, Minor League affiliates and scouting.

In addition, Cox will work with the office of the president on special business projects.

A report came out today noting how the relationship between General Manager Frank Wren and Cox had been strained due to the handling of John Smoltz. It so apparently got so bad that Cox almost quit during Spring Training.

Comments

Good for Bobby, good for the Braves.

As for his replacement, I tend to believe that Cox will have tremendous say as to who his successor is.

For my money, I'm going to say the manager in 2011 is going to be Terry Pendleton.
