Braves release Glavine
The Atlanta Braves have released Tom Glavine:
In a surprising move, the Braves released Tom Glavine on Wednesday, only days before he was expected to be added to the major-league rotation. They avoided paying the 305-game winner a $1 million bonus he was owed if he had been added to the major-league roster. The Braves are calling up Tommy Hanson, who is absolutely ripping apart hitters in the Triple-A.Glavine, 43, had been on the disabled list all season recovering from August shoulder and elbow surgeries. He pitched six scoreless innings in what was supposed to be his final minor-league rehab start Tuesday for Class A Rome.
While I'm excited about Hanson, the treatment of Glavine (preceded by John Smoltz) bothers me. Glavine, like Smoltz, is a Braves icon. The team wouldn't have had success in the 90's without him. You put the guy on rehab. He has a rocky first outing, but it's follow by two excellent starts.
Now you know why the Braves didn't want him to come back after that second rehab start. God forbid he make the roster and they have to pay him a bonus.

It sucks, but we're a decade past the successes of the 90s Atlanta Braves. This serves as yet another reminder that professional sports is a business.

Well I could handle no Sid Bream. Then my man Steve Avery. But Glavine? Are you kidding me? Its official. The world has gone to hell in a handbasket.

I might feel sorry for him if he hadn't taken that contract with the Mets for a pittance more than the Braves were offering. I'd say they're even now.
