Obama's first tax hike takes effect

Barack Obama's first tax hike, a 62-cent increase on tobacco products, went into effect today. The tax hurts the poor the most. One one hand they want us to believe that these taxes discourage and decrease smoking. On the other hand they say that they'll fund various healthcare programs, in this case, SCHIP. That doesn't make much sense.

Looks like folks will resort back to rabbit tobacco. The thinking of these people leaves a lot to be desired. People will continue to smoke because most are addicted to the nicotine. That is in the governments favor. It is all about control.

As most smokers will tell you, this price hike already happened a couple of weeks ago; however, most brands went up anywhere from $.75-1.25 (might as well make a little extra if you're a manufacturer or wholesaler, right?).

Jason is right--tobacco taxes hit the poorest the most and poorer people are more likely to be smokers. And as has been evidenced by the last fed. excise increase and more than 3/4 of states that have raised their excise taxes--revenues ultimately fall.

You are also right about the doublespeak you get from politicians. That's definitely how it was when the GA legis. was looking at a dollar increase in the state tax (thank god it didn't make it...this year). They always spout off about all the additional revenue but when presented with the cold hard facts, they change their tune to "helping people quit and keeping kids from ever starting."

Absolute BS!

Either they are raising taxes on the poor (which Obama said he wouldn't do) to raise revenue or they're trying to be nanny staters. They're talking out of both sides of their mouth. And either way--it sucks!

Well...nothing like government to greatly harm an industry and make things worse overall. It's what they do best.

AAAAHHHHAAAAHHHHH......
I just jumped in front of a MAC truck to ease the pain

The Obama Administration is targeting the poorer sector of this nation to apply these taxes which were infused by the Democratic Congress upon a social sector of this nation. This would be a tax increase of mega proportions. He has to pay for all the bailouts through the poor.
