Utah's AG to investigate BCS

Utah's Attorney General says that the BCS could violate anti-trust laws:

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said Tuesday he is launching an investigation into the Bowl Championship Series for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after an undefeated Utah team was left out of the national title game for the second time in five years.

Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah, which is a member of a conference without an automatic bid to a BCS bowl, at a competitive and financial disadvantage.

"We've established that from the very first day, from the very fist kickoff in the college season, more than half of the schools are put on an unlevel playing field," Shurtleff said. "They will never be allowed to play for a national championship."
[...]
He said he would prefer for the BCS and university presidents to solve the problem of excluding certain schools from a national title game themselves by creating a playoff system, but he said he's committed to doing whatever it takes to see changes are made.

I heard about this on Pardon the Interruption. When Tony Kornheiser heard about it, he said, "[T]his man should be removed from office immediately." Seems harsh, but really, this is dumb.

He apparently did the same thing in 2004, the last time the Utes went undefeated. Looking at the schedule from 2004, who the hell did they play? The Utes finished 7-5 in 2005, 8-5 in 2006 and 9-4 in 2007. They played a few quality opponents in those years.

They had a better schedule this year, but still middle of the pack while teams like Florida and Oklahoma are at the top in strength of schedule.

Utah proved a lot of people wrong when they beat Alabama, but they don't deserve to play in the National Championship game.

And we all know this is one of the most pressing problems in America.
The impact this is going to have on my retirement, the lives of my children and grand children ... We need more of this kind of government intervention in this one of the most important areas of our society...
The impact this kind of blatant disregard for anti-trust laws and the flaunting of arrogance by the BCS is one of the most damaging to the very moral fabric of America....
Why this is almost as bad as the Madoff debacle.
I tell you folks America is lost.

Well, you're wrong.
