Johnson running for Lt. Governor

State Sen. Eric Johnson has announced his intention to run for Lt. Governor in 2010:

Vowing to be a bridge between citizens and elected officials, Eric Johnson has formally launched his bid for lieutenant governor in 2010.

Johnson is giving up Senate leadership posts - most notably that of president pro tem - to focus on 2010.

He's hired veteran campaign strategist Derrick Dickey and held a Savannah fundraiser Tuesday that he said raised "close to" $200,000.

As the Senate's presiding officer, the lieutenant governor plays a key role in shaping the state's legislative agenda.

"I have the experience," Johnson told the Savannah Morning News as he announced his candidacy Wednesday. "I have virtually done the job I'm running for without having held the title."

Johnson won the pro tem post - No. 2 in the Senate pecking order behind the lieutenant governor - in 2003.

But he was de facto lieutenant governor from 2003 through 2006, when Cagle was elected.

State Sen. David Shafer hasn't officially announced, but he is quietly asking for and building support around the state. It'll be a competitive race for sure.

Johnson shaved his goatee. Bad idea. You can't win without a goatee.
