RNC Open Thread - Day 3
Today is the third day of the Republican National Convention. Several former presidential contenders will give speeches tonight, Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani. The keynote will be delivered by Sarah Palin, McCain's VP.
I may live-blog Palin's speech tonight. Don't know if I'll have time.
[7:58pm] Peggy Noonan on Sarah Palin: "I think they went for this — excuse me — political bullshit about narratives."
[8:04pm] Noonan defends her comments: "I just got mugged by the nature of modern media, and I wish it weren't my fault, but it is."
[8:13pm] Here are some excerpts from Palin's speech.
[8:28pm] Rasmussen: Clinton beats Palin, 52% to 41% in a hypothetical poll. Palin wins among men, 49% to 45%.
Comments
[10:38 pm] - this is great -- but is she a little TOO folksy, regular person? People want their President (and by implication their Vice President) to be smarter and better than they are.

The line about how "a mayor is sort of like a community organizer" was suggested by Jim Geraghty at National Review OnLine

[10:55 pm] - she was doing better before she starting hammering Barrack... but so far she seems like a good speaker... not that that should matter (but it does)

[10:58 pm] - ok now she is preaching to the choir about Obama raising taxes. But I bet this is playing well in Peoria.

(11:03] - "There is only man in this race who has really fought for you" - thats a great line. Whoever wrote this speech deserves a raise

i like her, good speaker, attractive, down to earth. I have been having a hard time trying to pick between the lesser of the two evils. I hear that she is a maverick, that is exactly what we need not someone who will drink the Koolaid and be another run-of-the-mill yes persom.

[11:09 pm] - you heard it here first, she is going to eat Biden alive in the debate. If the Libertarians could get into the debate a Wayne Allyn Root - Sarah Palin showdown would be the most entertaining debate EVER.

Nothing too terribly earth shattering in this speech, very run of the mill. I get the feeling she's not going to do well against the more seasoned Biden in the VP debate.
But honestly, the second name on the ticket doesn't matter... I'm interested to see if McCain can actually perform for once on the mic.

[11:12 pm] Wolf Blitzer said she hit it out of the park. I think I agree with the voice on CNN that said McCain found his attack dog. She may be the best Veep in that role since Agnew.

Maybe Mr. McCain has found the balance he needed for the job.

I think, in a way, we see that she is better than we are. She worked her way from regular mom, to mayor, to governor fairly quickly without an ex-president husband, without affirmative action, without an equal rights amendment. And it seems that she and her husband built a strong family themselves; they didn't rely on the government to be the father to their children. She had 5 kids, not so that she could get government assistance, but because she actually loves and values life.
May feminists cower!

I liked what she said about the only difference between a hockey mom and the pit bill being lipstick - that tells me that she is a very strong person - I liked her - I think that she will do well

And she all ready has Bush's speech writers writing her speeches!
Wonderful!
4 more years!
McCain/Palin - more of the same

Trevor,
Who writes Obama's speeches?
That's pathetic criticism.
Posted by: Jason | September 4, 2008 09:11 AM
Jason,
Somebody who hasn't been in the White House helping to guide 8 years of failed foreign and domestic policy.
It's not pathetic, it's very valid. A McCain Administration is very clearly a continuation of the past 8 years of failed policies, so much so that they're just keeping the same speech writers so they can keep writing the same things we've been hearing for 8 years.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Trev,
That last line is basically what the Obama campaign needs to hit hard with the rest of the campaign.
Make McCain look like the big government Republican that he is. The picture doesn't have to accurate, just convincing.

Jason,
I have to agree with Trev here.
I do see Palin as a female version of W. Look at the comments of Robbie and Dee and other "R no matter what" voters. They seem to buy the facade and never look at the substance of her record. No mention of her actual support on policies. She's folksy, looks like one of us, talks the talk. Reminds me a little bit at how they buy into Saxby's rhetoric and not his substance. Look at your statements compared to theirs... you talked about her support of big government involvement on issues... they talk about how she looks and makes them feel. It's "Change" vs. "Reform" but they never say to what. I bet it's "to More" government.

Obama is never going to attack McCain as a big government Republic
