RNC Open Thread - Day 2

This is the second day of the Republican National Convention. Day 1 was modified due to Hurricane Gustav, though Laura Bush and Cindy McCain addressed the delegates.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN), Laura Bush and President Bush (via satellite) will address the convention tonight.

Today is also Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic, which is being covered extensively over at United Liberty. Dr. Paul's event is making convention organizers and GOP leadership uneasy. Word got out today that McCain's people are working to get support from Dr. Paul, as well as the names of his delegates.

The Rally for the Republic is on cspan2.

Thanks for the UL live blog coverage plug. We have a lot more to write about.

The McCain people have made NO attempt to reach out to Dr. Paul. This was confirmed by Paul himself in an interview with CNN.

This story is completely fabricated. (Not directed at you Jason.)

So should the McCain folks be reaching out to Paul even when his platform on fighting the war on terror does not line up with McCain or the GOP for that matter?

And I guess McCain is the shining example of always pushing the party line? Poor example, Publius.

No Jason... the convention is an RNC event to promote our candidate and his platform for President. Ron Paul does not agree with McCain's platform (if you would read my post) and for that matter the GOP platform.

The Paul event was filled with boos for the RNC. Did they boo McCain too? Yes is probably the answer. Ron Paul is a "R" only because it is next to his name on the ballot.

It is a bunch of anti war libertarians at the Paul event. They are voting for Barr and that is fine, but don't claim to be a Republican.

According to the Ron Paul Rally.. Republicans are fascist evil people and we should all join the Libertarian party. If I call myself a conservative I don't love freedom.

Hmmm.... Not interested in what Ron Paul is selling.

Imagine that, conservatives dont like being called names.

but liberals hate America

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Most of the Ron Paul supporters I know don't even support the Libertarian Party, though they may have philosophically libertarian beliefs. Not all libertarians are Libertarians.

Remember what Reagan said, "I believe the heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism."

I am using their words Jason. I actually watched the event. It was all about Libertarians. I do not care what goes on, just find in it funny the association Ron Paul and his followers wish to have with the GOP. They are not Republicans... sorry.

As for Xavier... call me whatever you want does not bother me a bit. My post is about why would McCain reach out to Paul. It is like Obama reaching out to Lieberman... just doesn't make much sense.

Republicans and Democrats all want the same thing, we just disagree on the method to achieve the goal. Ron Paul wants to blow up everything, build a fence around America and to heck with those that can not do for themselves.

Republicans and Democrats all want the same thing, we just disagree on the method to achieve the goal. [And I consider] Ron Paul [a kook because he doesn't want redstributive policies for] those that can not do for themselves.

I'm not a fan of Paul, but what you seem to be implying is that Republicans and Democrats agree that the government should pick the winners and losers in our economy, but that the only disagreement between the parties is who these people should be.

You also seem to be asserting that Paul's domestic views should be anathema to all right-thinking people because he believes markets allocate resources better than bureacracies.

Is this a fair reading of your argument?

Jason. Looks like you're getting my point. You said, "Not all libertarians are Libertarians." I say, in reference to Bob Barr, "Not all Libertarians are libertarians."

Doug,
Sorry was out of pocket for a while. Here is what I am trying to say.

Republicans and Democrats all want good schools, a strong economy, affordable healthcare, a military to keep us safe. The difference is that Republicans believe by reducing taxes, reducing the size of government, local control of education, and the market will provide the best atmosphere to achieve these goals. The Democrats believe government can fix what ails us.

Have elected Republicans done their job and followed the platform... NO! Not since the contract with America have we as Republicans had much to be proud of... Is there hope that we get back to our roots... YES!

I am all for third party access... the public on the other hand is not there yet.

By the way, I do believe markets for the most part are better at allocating resources... but there are those who need the help of Government. The problem is that not a single politician or government agency roots out the abuse of the system. Take Georgia for instance... we have peachcare which is supposed to be for children whose family can not afford healthcare. I personally know families who combined income is greater than 100K and they use peachcare. What about the free lunch program in our public schools? The schools are not allowed to verify income so mom and dad who drive a new lexus are getting free meals for their kids just by filling out a form.

These abuses need to be addressed. There are those that need help and the government is their last resort.
