NRCC urges candidates to avoid convention

I think this says a lot about the current state of the GOP:

In a Thursday conference call with lawmakers and campaign strategists, National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Tom Cole argued candidates should steer clear of the party’s summer convention in Minneapolis, calling it a “waste of time” in a tough year when every day on the campaign trail counts.

According to a report in The Hill, the Oklahoma congressman urged Republican lawmakers to feel free to criticize the party – including prospective future colleagues, citing dismal congressional approval ratings. “These ratings are worse than we had on the eve of losing the majority,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to say you are disappointed in fellow Republicans… don’t hesitate to be anti-Washington, D.C.’”

Several GOP senators have already announced their plans to skip the Republican National Convention, including Maine Senator Susan Collins and North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole, who had a prime-team speaking role at the last RNC.

Conventions are supposed to be a time to rally the troops for battle. This makes it sound like going a convention is like going to see the dentist.

It is kind of weird. The GOP seems to be headed for a meltdown. Interestingly, and I guess weirdly enough, I had a dream the other night that Saxby Chambliss lost in Georgia and on election night, they reported Republican after Repubican loss. I wonder if that will become reality?

Hey Prof,
Nothing weird about the foreseen meltdown of the GOP nor the DEMs. If you will observe the entire local, state and national elections you will see that it is not a party that is melting down it is a system.
Democracy and a representative form of government is fading from existance faster than the Falcons can blow a 21 point lead.
It really has nothing to do with the party it has to do with the participation of the citizens who have given into the premise that their one vote can not make a difference.
We are now being lead as sheep to the slaughter not by policys that are by and for the people but by and industry that is called politics.
We are the supplier of the funds that support a system of government that has been preverted to suit and support those who involve themselves and are active is putting forth their agenda.
Much like a street fight when we were youngsters. You will always lose your fight unless you are willing to strike back harder and more frequently than your attacker.
What has happened to America is the government has thru it's collective powers intimidated the citizens into not striking back.
American government has now become the master that is over the people not of,by and for the people.
America will never recover nor know the freedom we did in days past because we have been made to fear and bow down to its tyranny.
Just know that power is as intoxicating as any drug known to man and we both know an intoxicated person has no clear reason or thoughts save more intoxication.
Politicians are much like crack additcts, all they want is that next hit and are willing to sell, say or do anything to obtain it.
One of greatest lines I ever heard in a movie was in "Clear and Present Danger" when one of the presidents aides said "all a first term politician wants is a second term" I think that describes most of the professional politicians today.
How unfortunate for us that we because we refuse to be responsible and exercise our right to vote that we allow this.
As for Saxby being defeated we can only wish.......
