Georgia SOS debuts transparency website
I got a press release from Karen Handel's office earlier today about the Transparency in Government Initiative website going live:
“Responsible fiscal management begins with a commitment to transparency and accountability,” Secretary Handel said. “Georgia taxpayers deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent, and I am pleased to provide them with that information.”The Transparency in Government Initiative website will be updated monthly with detailed information on how the agency spends taxpayer dollars.
The website will have monthly information on state spending and the budget for the current fiscal year. It also has the Secretary of State's Ethics Policy and Secretary Handel's own financial and campaign disclosures.
The National Taxpayers Union has also mentioned the debut of the website.
[CORRECTION] I originally wrote that this website was a product of SB 300. I was wrong on that. The site was setup at the direction of Secretary Handel.
Comments
I hope the transparency doesn't turn into being fair to partly cloudy.

You are ever the optimist as we both know the numbers will be what THEY want them to be.
You were a numbers cruncher so you know that in noncritical situations you can manipulate them to achieve your desired results and appearance.
We both know that there is too much corruption, waste and fraud for the government to be transparent and truthful about the spending of my and your tax dollar.

As for the site being authorized by a politician, the only thing that tell me is somebody needed a job and they were in a position to create one. "Uh I know your degree is in basket weaving but do you think you could learn to build a web site that we could say was a good thing for the tax payer? If you can then we will create a new department and you can be the director"...

It might mean Don the cynic; Karen Handel believes in good government and illustrates it by acting prudent. It is easier to rip someone than to find good? You misanthropist attitude really is poor. Try to find some worthy cause in the actions and less criticism. It puts you as such a curmudgeon. This is good news and I for one think she has done well. However time will tell, but go on belittle the actions to make yourself essential to this site.

Don, my friend I do try to be optimistic about things and I do know about the underlying issue of numbers.
Remember there are other numbers that can be manipulated to create the right situation for a person. The key word here is person. Think my friend and you will understand what I am talking about. Keep bringing forth your voice sir and don't let someone tell you that your voice is putting someone down all the time. You just see things and don't try to put icing on the things that need saying. I like a person who voices their opinion. And that goes for those who might say something I don't agree with but I do appreciate your use of freedom of speech. Opinions are ours
and expressing them is what people should do. People often miss the point of a site such as this. Mr. Jason Pye has given us the chance and opportunity to use his site to bring forth varying viewpoints about subjects that are in the forefront of the news. Ideas that will not be heard on the news or in any paper. Thank you Jason for letting us speak and say what is own our minds. If people don't talk then we are dead from the start when it comes to deciding how to fix our problems. Communication is the key to what is wrong in the world.
People don't talk and listen to each other. Compromise is where we can disagree but find some common ground.

You fail to notice that I did say a politician and it is the political system and the way it works that make me not only a cynic but very suspicious of the actions of most politicians .
Karen Handel as a person has done a good job and is a,as far as I know, person of character and integrity but she is part of a SYSTEM that is where my cynicism and suspicion lie. Not in the person but the system.
I have found my cynicism has at times caused folks to view situations much more closely than had they just given it a fleeting glance.
That is my goal and purpose in the political system, WAKE UP AMERICA. We are in the fix we are in because we have been trusting and believing in a government that has learned that we do not hold them accountable.
That sir/madam is my reason behind my suspicion. And I have been disappointed few times, how about yourself?

after reading your post I did respond a little too quickly and as I often do wrote and entered before reading what I wrote.
Firstly I would like to correct your perception of me and others that post in the negative on this site.
I like ALL people and in fact enjoy them. I even like folks I disagree with.
I do not like nor do I trust the actions of individual politicians and the collective actions of the political party's in America today.
In my experience the present political agenda in our nation and it has been such for the past 45 or so years is to control and infringe on the rights of the tax paying citizens of America and most of the time that has been done by deceit and misrepresentation of presented facts.
I believe it is the goal of the government to make every segment of society dependent upon government because with that dependency comes the inability of society to respond in an adverse manner if government takes actions that the citizens do not approve of much like the communist governments of China and the USSR. I am not a conspiracy theorist I am a student of history.
As for labeling me as a misanthropist I will have to say you are correct. I do have a general dislike of ,not the person, but of the conduct of most politicians. I to believe that my attitude is one more akin to antipathy than misanthropist but you are entitled to your opinion ...we just disagree.
Curmudgeon? This should only be used to describe someone you have had personal interaction with. I am the most even tempered person you will ever meet unless you try to sell me a bill of goods based on your thinking I may be stupid enough to buy it. Yes I will act very curmudgeonly when that happens. My disposition is not emotional it is factual and my reaction is always based on facts and the fact is I have know very few political actions taken in the past half century that benefited me. Most actions taken and programs enacted during this aforementioned time has in fact been for the benefit of politicians and their benefactors and cost the taxpayers of our nation much more than was returned to them.
I prefer laughing at myself more than laughing at others and am only cantankerous when it can lighten a situation.
Ill tempered no ,only if you lie to me. Cantankerous no, only if it is done in and with humor.
I know Webster say old and stubborn but that can only be half applied to me. If you are 30 I am old but if you are 90 I'm just a youngn' .
Stubborn yep I am but only when it matters and sir/madam the American, not Atlanta/Washington way of life and the ideals not ideas this nation was found for and on matter.
Again please understand I do,am and will attack those I feel would corrupt and destroy those ideals.
In conclusion I am not a cynic I am cynical about politicians and suspicious of each and every action they do.I believe history supports my position that government cannot be trusted to do what it says it will do.
Lord Acton in 1887 stated in his letter to Bishop Crieghton that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". Information and knowledge are power. Be informed and make sure your information is correct.
These are my motives sir/madam to have the citizens demand accurate and TRUE information from those who claim to serve.
Saying something is truth does not make it true.
