What's $50 Million Among Friends?

The attached listed transactions were completed between January 1, 2004 and July 24, 2008. This information was obtained as a result of an open records request to County Manager Rob Magnaghi presented July 24, 2008. Request for copies were made for all real estate purchases and condemnations not to include right of way purchases or condemnations. I was advised that the below does not include SPLOST purchases either.

Don't forget this is a gift that keeps on taking as all of this property is taken off the tax roles as well which explains why my taxes keep going up and up in Henry.

That's a lot of taxpayer money that could have gone to help fix our infrastructure. Some money spent on a piece of property and the only piece in the area because of a flood plain. There are other properties all around this piece that are listed in a flood plain and they have not been purchased by us yet. I know the property and family who lived on it well. They lived there for nearly 40 years and no one can remember it ever flooding. The list contains some very influencial people who have had ties here that go back for generations. A lot of money spent. The property bought to house the county buildings was something that was needed. It is amazing how much park land is valued at these days. But if the people want a park then the price will come later with property reassessments that rival any in the metro area. Money, money, money, that is the necessary evil of this world. But wasted money is another story. It reminds one of the $50 toilet seats and $50 hammers the Federal government spent years ago.
Watch your money folks because it looks like things are going to get tighter.

The county BoC is the body that represents me as a tax payer. As a consumer I look for the best deals for my money. With that said I did a little checking on the list you provided. Why would anyone pay $222,000 for a piece of land that is valued at $54,000 on tax records? That is not logical, but this BoC does not have a logical track record. Not being very frugal in these hard economic times. Once again the taxpayers got it in the end.

It will keep on rolling. Masterful is how I explain the local GOP that can stick to their claims of conservative government and we all buy it. Tight budgets, people’s voice on handling their own issues, and government backing them, when it does not cost one dime extra to do so, is my motto. To buy and build is the way to keep the money flowing toward one’s election or reelection. 20% of the people having 100% of the say in government is killing us taxpayers.
This run-off might have 10% of the people getting their way.

As bad as the GOP is, the Democrats are worse. Look over into the abyss known as Clayton County and you'll see that.

It outrages me too as a taxpayer that this amount of land was taken off the digest and there is no hope to gain additional tax revenue from it. It looks like one of the candidates in the chairman's runoff was in office for all but two of the purchases. Her pet project represents 8 million of the 50 or almost 20 percent. I would love to know what the seller (sorry condemnee) paid for it and when. I've heard that he basically doubled his money in less than a year. This kind of wasteful spending is not what I would call a good track record to fall back on. It is time for a change. Enough said. Seriously, go out and vote this week or on next Tuesday the 5th. The chairman's race is very serious and will have lasting implications as this county goes through an economic crisis (as well as the rest of the country). We need someone with fiscal responsibility and from the list I just reviewed I don't see it from the past four years. I'm rambling, but thanks for the list Larry. I hope it opens up a few eyes to the kind of money that goes out the window at the BOC and ultimately our pocket books. I don't think the average citizen is aware.

Unless you want more of the same wasteful spending that we have experienced in the past VOTE.
If you want change vote for B.J because that is what you will be left with.
Remember Fred has no where near the payoffs to use taxpayer money on as B.J
IF YOU DON'T VOTE THEN DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LEADERSHIP IN HENRY COUNTY.

Good Lord, BJ' ( "the accomplishment I'm most proud of) Mathis Nash Farm debacle is double what the the next most expensive land purchase was. Documents like this should be run as a full page ad in the newspaper so hopefully more people in Henry would be aware of how their taxpayer money is being spent. This is a power hungry, ego driven person. If she can do this kind of damage at the commissioner level, I can't imagine what havoc she would wreak if she were the Chairperson.

Look over into the abyss known as Clayton County and you'll see that.

Interesting that one of Clayton County's Comissioners lists Hampton as his residence.

Interesting that one of Clayton County's Comissioners lists Hampton as his residence.

Not that interesting if it is the part of Hampton in Clayton County.

I just finished early voting. So far, there have been only about half of the voters that there were in the primary. If this holds true, only 8-10% will vote. Sad, but at least my vote counts for more.
