Small loss of seats considered a victory for GOP
Republicans are bracing for a rough election (emphasis mine):
The dark clouds hovering over House Republicans hold one silver lining for Minority Leader John A. Boehner, GOP Whip Roy Blunt and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole: Expectations for November are now set so low that a loss of fewer than 10 seats could be seen as a sort of victory.H/T: Club for Growth

Look, the GOP deserves to lose seats. They had six years of absolute power & what did they do? If it were Democrats & Bill Clinton who'd doubled the size of the federal gov't in the 90s, Hannity & Limbaugh would remind everyone of this every day.
Republicans nominate John McCain, which makes me scratch my head & ask, "How?"
Republicans on all levels of gov't have shown this decade that they are the hypocrites. At least the Democrats campaign on increasing the size of gov't.
I think it's a good thing, actually. Let's just go ahead & let the Democratic-Socialists have their way. Maybe then we can get some new blood in the GOP & get rid of the old Big Gov't Republicanism politicians.

from politico.com:
In a piece published in Human Events, the Republicans’ onetime captain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, warned his old colleagues that they face “real disaster” on Election Day unless they move immediately to “chart a bold course of real reform” for the country.
And in a closed-door session at the Capitol, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told members that the NRCC doesn’t have enough cash to “save them” in November if they don’t raise enough money or run strong campaigns themselves.
Although a top House Republican brushed aside Gingrich’s broadside as “hype from a has-been who desperately wants to be a player but can’t anymore,” the harsh words from Cole were harder to ignore.
...
But Cole’s overall message was clear, said members who sat through the meeting: “If you’re not out doing your own work, and you’re waiting for the NRCC to come in at the last minute and save you, it ain’t gonna happen.” That’s how one lawmaker characterized Cole’s talk, adding that the NRCC is “not going to have the resources” to help all members “and Democrats will have a lot more money.”
The GOP is in trouble because it is playing tough enough and it is not communicating well enough. Republicans should speak in public like Tom Cole apparently speaks to his fellow House Republicans in private. Newt Gingrich is an idiot. He needs to shut his mouth. Nobody likes him, except for a few pseudo-political conservatives, who think he is the most brilliant guy in the world, but who have never heard of real conservative intellectuals, such as the late Bill Buckley or Irving Kristol. People like John McCain (I still say he will win in a landslide) because he sticks to two conservative principles: a strong national defense and low taxes.
Meanwhile, Has-Been Newt has abandoned conservative principles and thinks Republicans should announce some grand government program of "real change." See here. Some of his ideas are good, but are they going to resonate with the average voter who is bombarded with simplistic, hysterical messages of how bad Iraq is going, how our economy is slowing, how the dollar is weak, etc.? The Republicans need a simple message: we will fight America's enemies and lower your taxes. And when specific issues come up, each candidate has to be articulate and passionate enough to talk tough and always come back to the two conservative points: protecting Americans and lowering taxes.

Sorry, my first sentence should read, "...NOT playing tough enough..."

Irving Kristol is a neo-conservative. He believes in using big-government to achieve conservative ends. Not exactly a good role model.

Irving Krisol understands that it's not vague "fiscal responsibility" that is important, it is growth, caused mainly by tax cuts and tax simplification.
If Barack Obama starts talking like these guys, he can win the election.

Newt Gingrich is an out-of-touch lightweight who thinks that "fiscal irresponsibility" is why Republicans lose elections.

"Newt Gingrich is an out-of-touch lightweight who thinks that "fiscal irresponsibility" is why Republicans lose elections.
I think there are a lot of reasons that the GOP has been losing elections. Fiscal irresponsibility is a big one in my opinion.
In fact, aside from the GOP base that thinks "the worst Republican is better than the best Democrat" I would say that is a big problem for a lot of independent voters.
