Obama plans speech on race

McQ stole my headline for this, but Barack Obama will be giving a speech on race tomorrow due to the recent reaction due controversial comments by his pastor:

"I am going to be talking about not just Reverend Wright, but the larger issue of race in this campaign," he said.

He added that he would "talk about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church issue for example," he said.

He also briefly defended Wright from the image that has come through in a handful of repeatedly televised clips from recent Wright sermons.

"The caricature that’s being painted of him is not accurate," he said.

The speech could offer Obama an opportunity to move past the controversy over his pastor, and to turn the conversation to a topic he'd rather focus on: his Christian faith. But the speech also guarantees that the Wright story will continue to dominate political headlines.

Wright is no longer serving on Obama's campaign.

If Obama defends his pastor's comments, it's going to hurt him. You simply cannot defend someone who says "God Damn America" in this political climate, especially when you are already being accused of anti-Americanism.

Comments

C'mon Jason, you know he isn't going to defend the comments, he has already denounced them several times and will do so again in this speech.

His comments are not perceived they are factual and the caricature is not being painted by the media. He said what he said and I have serious doubts that this is the first time . If you think the race issue is dead in america just listen to the politicians,of course the political leaders in America do not want race issues to go away as that is one of the ways they keep power. If they can keep us fighting among ourselves we won't be watching them .

It is unfortunate how the fictional concept of race has been used in the course of history. Particularly in our own country.

Based on Barack Obama's recent string of interviews on this subject, I am beginning to take the assumption that he rarely attends this congregation. Let us take his word for it and start simple.
The Trinity United Church website provides plenty of insightful tidbits. With just a few clicks you quickly discover that race identity, or the afro-centric mindset, is core to their identity. It is clearly stated under their 'About' page that, "...We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black,..God has superintended our pilgrimage through...the long night of racism".
My question is, If you want to end racism, why base your entire worship experience to race and the downfalls of such belief? They seem to take to the angry welts of racism with pride and find some sadistic joy that God led them through this. Perhaps a better 'Liberation' begins by slipping out the back-door and free one-self of this prattle.

With a little research, anyone can discover why Barack Obama chose to favor Wright and his 'Libertation Theology-based' religion.
The church's influence and impact in the Chicago African_American community is prolific. It is only natural for a politician, yes, even Obama to have such links. Unless, of course, you are the recipient of drooling white voters who see you as a 'Change' to what has come before.

Never mind the race-centric religion or the Louis Farrakhan (bow)tie or the forecast of potential storms on the Weather Underground connection. Can't we just go back to idolizing Obama as a great orator with trite slogans?

I'm a member of a church that since December 2005 I've attended mass at a total of 4 times.

Should I make sure to request all of the sermons of the past years to assure they haven't said anything objectionable?

The caricature that’s being painted of him is not accurate.

"Reverend" Wright is a caricature! He shows what a silly little man Barack Obama is. I don't know if Barack Obama or the congregation really believe in what "R
