Petrino quits Falcons

I don't blame Bobby Petrino at all for this move:

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino, in a move that was said to have blindsided team officials, resigned Tuesday evening to take the head-coaching job at the University of Arkansas, the team confirmed.
[...]
Before the Falcons' 34-14 loss to New Orleans Monday, Blank said that he had heard rumors that Arkansas had targeted Petrino to replace Houston Nutt as head coach. So he said he asked Petrino if he was considering that job.

Petrino, who was signed from the University of Louisville to a five-year, $24.5 million contract Jan. 8, told him Monday afternoon that he definitely would be back to coach the Falcons in 2008.

It was the second time Blank had asked Petrino about his commitment to the team and the second time Petrino told him he would be back next season.

I guess it was to be expected. He never really gelled with some of the players, especially veterans. Some thought they were being weeded out, like Alge Crumpler and Warrick Dunn.

All this aside, I thought Redman played well last night.

I don't see how this was to be "expected" at this point in the season. I guess it was just a case of the guy figuring out that it's a little more difficult in the NFL.

I don't think they'll go the route of another college coach. I also believe that there's going to be more pressure on Blank & McKay to hire a black coach. But part of me also says they're going to go after an established veteran coach without a job, like Schottenheimer, or at least a former coach who's now an assistant.

If I were to bet, I'd bet on the next Falcons coach being Mike Singletary.

On the bright side, maybe we have less of a chance at selecting Brohm in the draft.

Well, I thought he'd leave, but not with three games left to play.
