That Thompson ad
Last night during the debate, CNN showed this campaign ad from Fred Thompson that attacked Mitt Romney for his previous position on abortion and Mike Huckabee for his tax hiking ways.
Here is the expanded version of that video that also nails Giuliani on his endorsement for Mario Cuomo, a Democrat, over George Pataki, a Republican. It also shows Giuliani calling the NRA "extremists" and has some expanded footing of Mitt Romney defending abortion.
There's always a silver lining in everything. There's always an upside. Some of you might not think of this as an upside or a silver lining, but the genuine moderate as opposed to conservative aspects of three of the top-tier, four of the top-tier candidates were on full-fledged display last night. There was one candidate who did not display any moderateness or liberalism or have any of his past forays into those areas displayed, and that candidate was Fred Thompson.Thompson did better last night than in the previous debate, but I think he missed his chance.
Comments
I like Fred Thompson, and I'd vote for him but I don't think there is any way that he can beat Hillary. His views are in line with Bush's and most people (not me) are tired of Bush. I think the Republican candidate is going to have to have some centric views on an issue or 2 to get those undecided voters.

Bush is a centrist on several issues such as immigration. He is a liberal as far as spending goes, at least in his first six years.
People are tired of Bush because of a Iraq.
Thompson would carry over much of Bush's policies, but the "compassionate conservatism" crap would be continued by Tax Hike Mike and I think that is what people should be concerned with more than anything else out of the so-called top-tier candidates.

You're right about Bush but I'm more concerned about voting for someone that I think can win, even if I don't agree with them on every issue. I think Giuliani can win, I think Huckabee can win, the rest I'm not sure about.
I don't want to see Hillary or Obama in the White House.

I don't want to see Hillary or Obama in the White House.
I think that is something that you may have to get used to.
I think Giuliani can win...
He gives them the best chance.
I think Huckabee can win...
Fiscal conservatives will stay home. I'll vote for a Democrat before I vote for Tax Hike Mike.

I would drink Mike Huckabee's bathwater.

Consensus. Meet in the middle. Appease everyone.
These are the steadfast trademarks of a person with no principled direction.
I cannot vote for a "centrist" because, like certain local commissioners, he will stick his finger in the air to determine which way the prevailing wind is blowing.
I cannot vote for a liberal/socialist. The reasons are too obvious to list.
Where can I find a dyed-in-the-wool Conservative? When will any of the Republican "front runners" show me what I crave in a candidate.
Thompson is the only one to show backbone - but he cannot gain traction. I really need a candidate with Newt's intelligence, Thompson's conservatism, McCain's foreign policy...
Conservatives will (again) choose the lesser of evils.
