I need some advice

I bought a desktop last Thanksgiving and promised myself that I was set for a while. I had a laptop to take with me to the state capitol or if I needed to podcasts away from home. About three weeks ago Reagan got caught in the power cord for the laptop and pulled it off the coffee table and cracked the screen and broke the wireless card...Amanda didn't put it up after she'd used it. Yeah...I blame her, not the dog.

So...I need some suggestions on a new laptop. I've been browsing around Tiger Direct this morning, but I can't really find anything I like. If any of you computer nerds out there have any advice on what I should buy...I'm listening.

Back to listening to Thrice and cleaning.

Well, I bught two laptops for my kids. I call myself a nerd, but I wanted to go with what I knew. I was mistaken.

I shopped features, benefits and price. I learned quickly that new machines are loaded with Vista operating system. It's new and its Microsoft. That one fact means you will need a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM.

I compared everything: Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony... all of them. When it came to getting HD 17" screens, 120Gb hard drive, DVD burner, 2 Gb RAM, carry case, DVDs, USB cable... the cost per unit was about $1,000.

Then you add whatever software you do not already own, like Microsoft Office (Student, Professional, whatever)and specialized applications only you and your hairdresser can discuss.

I spent under $1,200 total per unit for HP. I recommend you do not make do with less than you need. That will cost you, too.

I know these threads go up and it's only a matter of time before one of the Mac fanboys says "get a Mac!!1!" But, the Macbooks and Macbook Pros have a magnetic power connector that would have saved your computer in that situation. Just sayin'...

I have a Macbook Pro and I love it.

If I had that kind of money I would get one. I'm talking about spending less than $700.

Don't you have a birthday coming up? Remember, remember,...

For $700 or less, you might have to order a Dell that still comes with XP (they're the only company still selling new machines with XP instead of Vista). Basically, any "bargain" laptop you find loaded with Vista probably won't be capable of actually running it well.

I agree with Rusty. My macbook is fantastic.

here's another vote for the Macbook Pro.

I bought my wife a 500 dollar computer last year and within 4 weeks, the hard drive failed and she lost all her work no it.
