Projects gutted out of the budget
The State Senate is doing a good job of gutting the supplemental budget:
"This is a conservative body. We believe in limited government," said Senate Majority Leader Tommie Williams (R-Lyons).As I understand it the $1.5 million for a study for the "Brain Train" was 86'd as well. I'm sure that piece of pork will find its was back in the FY 2008 budget.President Pro Tem Eric Johnson (R-Savannah) said many of those extra projects would be considered when lawmakers take up the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.
House leaders, who chided the Senate on Tuesday for engaging in "theatrics" to get their way, say their version of the budget provides much-needed funding.
But senators, and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, wanted to make a statement that local, special projects don't belong in a budget meant to pay for emergencies or problems that pop up during the course of a year.

The Senate removed all local projects, known as pork, from the midyear budget. Those projects include nearly $6 million for local museums, $1 million for the Tour de Georgia, $125,000 for a West Georgia tourism group, $19,000 for library equipment on St. Simons Island, and $350,000 for a new animal hospital at Zoo Atlanta.
The Senate budget also cuts out $13 million Perdue wanted for his "Go Fish Georgia" fishing tourism program, $50 million he wanted for land preservation, and $40 million to help get the Kia car plant in West Georgia up and running. Senate leaders said putting off the $40 million until fiscal 2008 won't endanger the project.
These moves do make it appear that the Senate is being fiscally responsible and standing on principle, but I wonder what the motivation is...are they merely trying to look more fiscally responsible or are they serious?
Anyway, in case you haven't seen it, the supplemental budget can be found here.
