Nanny State Republicans

Chris previously posted on this, but I wanted to add my two cents on State Senator Don Balfour's proposal to mandate HPV vaccinations for females entering the sixth grade (SB 155). Unfortunately, this cleared the Senate Health and Human Services Committee yesterday.

I cannot begin to explain what a horrible idea this is.

Over at Peach Pundit, Erick lists the different organizations that are against this legislation, which includes the American Medical Association, American College of Pediatricians and the CDC.

Let the parents be the parents. Government needs to stop intervening in the lives and decisions that should and could be made by individuals families. This is very similar to the mandatory mental health screenings in schools that were proposed in Congress a couple of years ago.

I have absolutely had it with these Republicans that claim to be for small government and more personal responsibility coming up with more ways to increase the size and scope of government. All we are getting from Republicans on the state and national level is more of the nanny state.

That's one reason why there shouldn't be a Libertarian Party. People who are libertarian-minded would have much greater influence on public policy if they belonged to one of the major parties.

Let's put it this way: Small-"l" libertarians have a much greater chance of commandeering the GOP -- much like the Goldwater/ Reagan forces took power from the Rockefeller Republicans -- than actually having electoral success as members of the Libertarian Party.

People who believe in limited government would be better off if the LP faded away, and its followers decided to reform either the GOP or the Democratic Party.

I disagree, Doug. Both parties are hopelessly corrupt. The few "good" politicians who have stayed in the two party system have minimal influence. The neoconservative revolution in the Republican party has made it impossible for libertarians to survive there. The Democrats are socialists. Good luck for libertarians there.

After reading your post, I am beginning to think the best place for Libertarians is to join the Democrats. I think the "social" only conservatives have very little in common with libertarians, while the libs might actually gain traction with the more libertine Democrats as well as the isolationists.

I do agree that they are doing nothing off in the ether planning to privatize the courts, the military, and other such things.

Let parents be parents... well thats nice to say and all but look at all the people not being parents - you have the school systems teaching kids about sex education - which in my opinion should be the parents job - you have young teens having babies that are still babies themselves - were are their parents at - then there is the whole concept of - lets send our kids to a christian school yo keep them from being exposed to this stuff- newsflash for those of you doing that- dont count on it - there was a girl in my junior class that had two abortions during the 11th grade year - parents being parents- that would really be nice- I am sorry - but MTV, my space, the internet, tv in general, thats what influencing your kids today - not parents - and I am not opposed to all those things - but PAY ATTENTION to what your kids are watching, you their friends are, where they are going and so forth - you could save yourself alot of heartache in the long run - I dont necessarily want someone telling me that I have to give my daughters a vaccine - but I hope that I would have sense enough to do it without having to be forced too...
