And the wasteful spending continues...

Why can't a private business provide this? Why do taxpayers have to foot the bill for something that a very small amount of people will use. Isn't there a Gold's Gym in McDonough that can provides a pool with the cost of a monthly membership?:

Henry officials are planning to build an indoor therapeutic swimming pool at Heritage Senior Center and hope to have it open by summer.

“We are in the planning phase. We have an architect and a contractor on board,” said SPLOST/Capital Projects Director Roy Clack. “We are trying to come up with a plan that suits the needs of the center.”

In an effort to due so, Clack, Pope Partners Architects and Headley Construction plan to visit other facilities in metro Atlanta to generate ideas for the senior center.

The county is also getting help from the city of McDonough, where the center is located at 1050 Florence McGarity Blvd.

“Last year we committed to offering $250,000. Recently we reinforced our support to honor that pledge,” said McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland.

[..]

Although this pool is designated to seniors, Copeland said that a public pool for all could be in the making.

“The city is very interested in the project and maybe in the future we can have a public pool for all of our folks,” he said.

Tell your commissioners that enough is enough. We need to end the wasteful spending and start focusing on real issues, not vote buying schemes.

I am sure that a bunch of senior citizens really want to go to GOlds Gym to use the pool - not too mention the fact that these people are on limited income- Golds is in the business to make money- I hardly see them allowing the Senior Citizens to use the pool for free - I dont know - but if there is one at the Citizens Center - hopefully they wouldnt have to pay for it -I think its a great idea and I would love to see SPLOST money go toward something that helps the Senior Citizens of our county - I personally see that as money well spent- do you know how many Senior Citizens are in our county or do you know anything about the Senior Citizen programs that our county offers?? If you dont - you should look into those - one day - we will be one of those Senior Citizens and we might be glad that someone actually thought about doing something to benefit us

Come on Jason cut these old farts a break will you. The Seniors of our county have lived hard lives and in their twilight years are in need of a little fun. Close your eyes and imagine Granny going down to the pool for some R&R sporting her new thong. Perhaps the County and City will be progressive enough to be topless as well. Granny will be out there flopping in the wind, her thong nice and tight riding high, looking for that someone special to grease her down.

If you ask me the City and County have got this one right. I don’t want my kids around that vision.

Truthfully, there should not be senior centers at all. If the county wants to do something for the community then it should be community centers where the old people can hang out.

Dee, it's a waste of county and city money. It's that simple.

I wonder how many of the Senior Citizens of the county read your blog and what they are thinking of you right now since you dont want them to have their little swimming pool... If they have been here for any amount of time - they have probably seen alot more than this wasted - I guess its all in whats really important to you - tell us jason - what would you be spending all the money on? I am sorry- this is one of the things that we just will have to agree to disagree - its that simple

Can they not find anything this county needs more than a swimming pool for the elderly? Just when you think they've hit bottom, they keep digging. You'd have to be an idiot to vote for another SPLOST while these people are controlling the money.

I really don't care what the senior citizens of the think of me when they read my site.

I wouldn't be spending the money. That's the point. I would be trying to give as much back to the taxpayers as possible through cutting taxes and privatizing services, and I mean true privatization where the government isn't involved in the equation.

Tell me...please, why should we be subsidizing a pool?! It makes absolutely no sense at all.

I certainly can't speak for Jason, but if I couldn't find anything better than a swimming pool to spend the money on, I would roll back property taxes and let the people who earned the money spend it on their families.
