BOE Bows to the Privileged Few Due to Politics
From an article from the Herald, Henry prepared to request class size waiver:
The Henry County Board of Education could be next on the list of 26 school systems throughout Georgia that have requested to be exempt from state-imposed class size caps. The move is not likely to happen this school year, according to Henry County Schools Superintendent Jack Parish, but the Henry County school board voted at its November meeting to grant Parish the authority to request a waiver from the Georgia Department of Education that would allow some classrooms to go over the new mandated class size limits.
Continues…
Henry County’s elementary schools would be those most affected by the class size reduction. And according to Parish, over-crowded classes at the elementary school level would likely be why the system would need to request a class size waiver.
With new elementary schools opening, rezoning is a natural phenomenon and relieves overcrowding at existing schools, except for East Lake Elementary (ELE.) The BOE has failed Henry County citizens that live in the school district of ELE. The BOE had the opportunity to rid all trailers next year at ELE but placated a vocal group living in Lake Haven.
The BOE gave into the group who made absurd claims over doing what was right – alleviating over crowdedness for those who should be attending ELE.
Those people living in Lake Haven should NEVER mumble about trailers at schools again because they are the source of denseness. Those people that remained in the district, and close by ELE should be up in arms about having trailers at the school especially if Walnut Creek Elementary is opened with empty classrooms.
When evaluating the BOE it’s hard to always see the positives when they do something like this. Henry County’s school taxes are some of the highest in the state. The BOE needs to be better stewards of the community assets and make the hard decisions which are in the interest of the county as a whole and not give special permission to single interest Groups like Lake Haven.
