GA-GOP straw poll results

The Georgia Republican Party held a straw poll today at its annual fish fry in Macon. Jim Galloway has the results:

  • Herman Cain: 26% (232 votes)
  • Ron Paul: 25.7% (229 votes)
  • Rick Perry: 20% (179 votes)
  • Newt Gingrich: 18% (162 votes)
  • Mitt Romney: 6% (51 votes)
  • Michele Bachmann: 3% (29 votes)
  • Rick Santorum: 0.4% 4 votes
  • Jon Huntsman: 0.3% (3 votes)
  • Thad McCotter: 0.1% (1 votes)

Although he won a straw poll in his home state, Cain’s campaign lost what traction he had; thanks largely to his own gaffes and inexperience and Bachmann and Perry coming into the mix of candidates. Paul, on the other hand, has seen his numbers rise. The most recent Gallup poll shows him in the top three – behind Perry and Romney – for the Republican nomination. He is also competitive against Barack Obama.

However, a straw poll means nothing as far as it goes. The most recent poll out of Georgia shows Perry leading.
