GA-Senate: Chambliss leads in final week

A couple new polls show that Sen. Saxby Chambliss has a lead over Jim Martin in the last week of the campaign. However, the race is still very close.
Public Policy Polling:
Chambliss – 52%
Martin – 46%
Undecided: 2%
Insider Advantage/Politico:
Chambliss – 50%
Martin – 47%
Undecided: 3%
Saxby Chambliss still refuses to admit that he is in trouble because he has alienated his base on many issues, ranging from spending to immigration to the Wall Street bailout. Check out these comments from Tom Perdue, Chambliss’ campaign manager:

[W]hat keeps Chambliss operatives up at night is that the runoff — with its emphasis on turnout — has little to do with either candidate’s performance and more to do with their own efforts to rally the base.
“My dog could have been on the ballot and would be in exactly the same position Jim Martin is today,” said Tom Perdue, Chambliss’ longtime political consultant. “Martin was the beneficiary of an Obama wave that swept the country. As a person, as a candidate, he’s the most insignificant opponent in all my 30 years of politics. Nobody knows who he is.”

Don’t forget that Republican insiders are accusing Perdue of running a terrible campaign with a candidate that lacks goodwill among the base because he spent four years playing golf.
If Chambliss loses, he has no one to blame but himself and his own arrogance for refusing to admit that he has made mistakes. If he wins, he won’t change.
